[TRIGGER WARNING: Abuse culture, defense of abusers, minimizing and erasure of abuse, and implied minimizing of microagressions and racism]
This is hitting way too high of the mark like when people throw the word “racist” around. I didn’t see anything abusive with that video, and I’m sensitive to that shit. Others are too. If my parents had done has he did, I’d have actually thought it was pretty bad-ass and would’ve submitted not as a cranky ass whiner but as a loving daughter. You know, after several days of tantrums.
I can assure you that the girl is okay, and she is going to survive this “traumatic” experience unscathed. Stop undermining real abuse by trying to pick out some where there isn’t any. If I blasted my parents on Facebook behind their backs, and then they blasted my laptop on camera, I sure as fuck would have a lot more respect for them.
*sigh*
No. It’s emotional abuse. He’s threatening her. The lesson he’s showing her is “if you make me angry, I’ll get a gun”. It’s intimidation. It’s using violence and fear to punish her. As someone I quoted pointed out earlier, people would probably not see this the same way if it had been her partner destroying something of hers.
Think about it. Like, let’s use my life as an example! I’m basically a child. My husband is our sole source of income and buys me everything. In return, I clean the house and help him out whenever I can. What if I talked shit about him in public and he retaliated by shooting my laptop (A gift he gave me, like pretty much everything I own. And the equivalent of my engagement ring!)? Or something else he bought me with his money? People would recognize that as abusive and (rightfully) flip the fuck out. I’d be scared shitless and run for the hills and try to get a restraining order.
Now, imagine that situation if he was my legal guardian and could make all of my decisions for me. Imagine if I had basically no right to own property. Imagine if I couldn’t just divorce him and move out.
That’s basically the situation minors are in. Not only are they financially dependent, they basically don’t have rights in a lot of situations. In some states they don’t have the right to their own bodies and their parents can, for example, force them to carry a pregnancy to term and then refuse to sign consent forms for epidurals and painkillers because they want them to experience the pain of childbirth. Or just deny them painkillers in general.
It’s fucking terrifying being a minor and knowing that your health, safety, and general wellbeing are subject to the whims of the people whose only qualification is the fact that they made you.
And when those people use their power over you to frighten and humiliate you? That’s sick.
Oh, and there’s a big difference between respect and fear. :/
